THE THINKING

Why we lean this way.

Chase and Higgins practiced fully Wednesday, supporting Cincinnati's most important offensive pairing. Tampa Bay is installing a new coordinator and new defensive communicators, including rookie starter Josiah Trotter. The Bengals' new Lawrence-Allen-Mafe front could make Tampa Bay work for rushing yards, but that is a projection, not demonstrated 2026 improvement. I expect both passing attacks to have productive stretches and give Cincinnati the small finishing edge.

  • Cincinnati allowed 6.0 yards per play and 2,500 rushing yards in 2025; offseason names alone do not prove that is fixed.
  • Chase's knee or Higgins' foot/heel issue could worsen or restrict routes.
  • Mayfield can exploit a new-look secondary, and Godwin/Egbuka can generate explosive plays.
  • Game-time wind, precipitation and field conditions have not been verified.

Ja'Marr Chase: reasoning and risks

Tampa Bay itself expects quick-game throws to Chase, offering a way for Burrow to move the ball before pressure arrives.

  • Knee symptoms or a surprise route restriction.
  • Extra coverage can direct more throws toward Higgins and Brown.
  • Tampa Bay's tackling can remove much of the projected run-after-catch output.

Tee Higgins: reasoning and risks

If Tampa Bay allocates help to Chase, Higgins can convert a few intermediate or boundary opportunities into the required yardage.

  • The foot/heel problem could restrict cuts or reappear.
  • Chase may absorb a disproportionate share of passing volume.
  • Pressure can prevent longer-developing routes from finishing.

Emeka Egbuka: reasoning and risks

A slightly trailing Tampa Bay script and Egbuka's established route role give him a sustainable path to 40 yards.

  • Toe symptoms or a reduced route plan.
  • Godwin, Otton and McMillan can keep targets widely distributed.
  • Cincinnati's new front may cause sacks or hurried low-quality throws.

Chase Brown: reasoning and risks

The modest Cincinnati lead forecast supports enough rushing volume for 50 yards, without assuming Tampa Bay is an easy rushing opponent.

  • Perine takes more early-down carries than expected.
  • Vea and the Tampa Bay front force Cincinnati to win almost entirely through passing.
  • Brown's useful receiving work does not count toward this rushing threshold.

Cade Otton: reasoning and risks

Otton offers Mayfield an interior outlet if Cincinnati's new pass rush disrupts longer routes; the threshold fits his established catch profile.

  • Extra blocking assignments can remove receiving routes.
  • Godwin, Egbuka and Gainwell may claim the underneath targets.
  • A new coordinator may distribute tight-end work differently.
